This is a guide to prices in Australia for photocopiers, printers, multifunction printers and multifunction devices. It is to be used as a guide only and by no means meant as a comprehensive price list.

Use this guide to determine a realistic budget price range for the photocopier or printer type you are looking to purchase. Once you have a better idea of what to expect, you can request actual price quotes tailored for your business needs from our large network of trusted and pre-qualified suppliers.

Single or multi-function printers

Businesses can choose from a large range of photocopiers, with a widely varied price range. Basic photocopiers are rarely sold these days. Your requirements will likely be for a either a single function device, such as a black & white or colour laser printer, or a multifunction device, which can copy, print and scan and more. Business quality office colour laser printers start from around $1,200 and go as high as $6,000

Home & Office printers

Office printers, also called business grade or business quality printers are designed and built to meet the higher print volume demands of a typical workplace or office, where often one printer is used by an entire office or department. For the very largest of offices, there are printers which are designed with very high duty cycles (the maximum number of pages you can print in a month without risking damage to the printer) which can be in the hundreds of thousands of pages. They can typically print up to A3 size. A3 office multifunction printers start from around $4,000 and go as high as $20,000 or more depending on functionality required.

Home printers on the other hand are smaller and cheaper than office printers. They are built for lighter use. Although available in A3, they are mostly restricted to printing on A4-sized paper. Many now offer Wi-Fi connection instead of via Ethernet, while some are limited to USB. Many home printers in use are inkjet printers. However, laser printers have come down in price a lot and for $300-$500 a decent multifunction printer can be purchased for home use. Home inkjet printers can be purchased from $60. But keep in mind the cost per print from these printers is very high. Replacing a set of ink cartridges is usually a lot more than the cost of the actual printer itself.

What do you need?

It all comes down to this; what do you actually need? How much could you, or more realistically, should you pay for your photocopier, printer or multifunction device? A4 and A3 office photocopiers and printers basically fall into 3 categories. Although a specialist category, Wide Format printers have also been included, as they are used in architectural, engineering, media and construction environments.

A4 & A3 Printer Prices

A4 & A3 Printers

These are single function printers, meaning they can only print. For a typical office printer, these print on either A4 only or up to A3 paper.

Most business grade, or commercial quality printers of this type would fall in a price range of around $1,200 – $5,000

A4 & A3  Multifunction Printer Prices

 A4 & A3  Multifunction Printer

A printer is called multifunctional when it can do more than just copying. These days almost all office printers sold are digital multifunction printers, also known as MFP’s, or All in One Printers.

They come in either A4 or up to A3 size and can print, copy and scan. They are much more versatile than a single function printer. They are best for small to medium size businesses that need both print and copy, or print and scan in either B&W or colour

Most business grade, or commercial quality multifunction printers of this type would roughly fall in a price range of around $1,500 – $3,500.

A3 Multifunction Device - MFD

A3 Multifunction Device (also known as an MFD)

The larger more robustly designed A3 machines will cost more in terms of equipment costs. However, these printers are designed and built to meet the higher print volume demands of a typical workplace or office, where one printer is often used by an entire office or department.

They are also typically a lot cheaper to run in the longer term. Whereas it might seem to make sense for the budget conscious buyer to purchase a cheaper device, it can end up costing 10 or 20x more to run over a 3-5 year period.

Business grade, commercial quality multifunction devices of this type have a very large price range. Roughly speaking they would fall in the $4,000 – $10,000 price range for a typical small-medium office. A refurbished machine could be purchased from around $2,500 (buyer beware) and higher end, high quality, high speed machines could be as high as $15,000-$20,000 or more.

Wide Format Colour Printer Prices

Wide Format Printer

Wide Format printers print on media that is larger than A3, typically, A2, A1, A0 or larger. In some cases much much larger, like 5-6 metres wide media.

Wide format printers can be sued for advertising signs, point of sale (POS) banners, outdoor signage, art printing, photography printing, backlit signs, posters, ads, and display banners, billboards and lots more.

They are also used in architectural, engineering and construction offices.

Again, the price range varies widely, from as low as $1,500 for a fairly basic wide format inkjet used to print architectural drawings to $25,000 or more, even hundreds of thousands for highly specialised printers.
